As the holiday season approaches, our administration is wrapping up another productive month. We celebrated the addition of 10,100 jobs in September—the largest single month gain since May 2015—and a decrease in our unemployment rate to 3.7%, matching a ten-year low. We also announced $40 million to support new and growing small businesses, began demolition of the dangerous and outdated Baltimore City Detention Center, and reached a landmark agreement with Exelon to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay.
As chairman of the National Governors Association, I lead a bipartisan summit in Detroit focused on strengthening America’s critical infrastructure. We met with industry experts to identify the most effective measures that governors can take to fulfill our most important responsibility: protecting our states and our citizens.
I also had the opportunity to visit local communities and celebrate the exciting things happening all across the state, from achievements in education to a new service center for veterans and annual fall festivals. And at the Governor’s Service Awards, it was my privilege to recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated the incredible spirit of generosity that truly sets Marylanders apart.
Remember to “fall back” this weekend as Daylight Savings Time ends, and enjoy the extra hour!
“This site, which was long a source of embarrassment and shame for the city and our state, will now become a beacon of hope where those struggling with addiction can get the help they need to heal, to recover, and to turn their lives around.”
“It’s great to be back in beautiful Hagerstown and to see the transformative results of our state investment of more than $8 million to assist in the revitalization of the city. Our administration pledged directly to the people of Washington County and Western Maryland that you would no longer be ignored, forgotten, or neglected. We said that we were going to pay more attention to your needs and concerns and today we are doing exactly what we said we would do.”
